ATLANTA - Street Smarts is honored to announce that the University of Massachusetts Amherst ITE Student Chapter presented its third annual Jane F. Garvey Transportation Leadership Award to Marsha Anderson Bomar, AICP, President and Founder of Street Smarts. The award is presented to a woman in recognition of her outstanding leadership affecting women in transportation and remarkable contributions to the field.

The award was named after Jane Garvey to honor her legacy as a pioneer in the field. The first two recipients were Lucy Garliauskas and Luisa Paiewonsky, both active members of the WTS-Boston chapter. Jane Garvey presented the leadership award endowed in her name.

"I am proud to be aligned with these truly exceptional women who have achieved this important designation, not only for their work in transportation, but setting a standard for women engineers as a whole," stated Ms. Bomar.

Jane F. Garvey was appointed by President Bill Clinton as the head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration from 1997 to 2002 and holds several "firsts" for an FAA Administrator: she was the first Administrator appointed to a 5-year term, the first female Administrator, and the first Administrator who was not a licensed pilot. She had previously worked as a teacher, highway safety administrator, and the director of Logan International Airport. Ms. Garvey earned her B.A. from Mount Saint Mary's College (a Catholic women's college in Hooksett, New Hampshire) and her M.A. from Mount Holyoke College and has been awarded several honorary degrees. She currently serves as the chairwoman of the Capital-to-Capital Coalition, which works to promote non-stop service between Beijing and Washington Dulles International Airport.

With over 35 years of experience in the field of transportation planning and traffic engineering, Ms. Bomar has been a pioneer in her own right for women in engineering by serving as a role model and mentor to many young women - most recently in presenting the Streets Smarts Foundation Endowment to the Georgia Tech Women in Engineering Mentors and Mentees Program as the Keynote Speaker for the Women in Engineering Excellence Award Banquet at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Ms. Bomar has been recognized as one of the Top 25 Professional Women to Watch by Atlanta Woman magazine and last year, was the honored recipient of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Southern District's Herman J. Hoose Distinguished Service Award.

Duluth's Newest Addition 'Tops Out'

New home of Street Smarts, Downtown Duluth, GA

DULUTH, GEORGIA, June 15, 2008 - The building is only steel and concrete, but more than 200 people turned out for the recent "topping out" ceremony for downtown Duluth's newest addition. The 40,000-square-foot Main Street building will house two businesses with major Duluth connections: Mathias Corp., which built the new City Hall, and Street Smarts, the company owned by City Councilwoman Marsha Anderson Bomar. Street Smarts, a transportation planning, design and engineering consulting firm with offices in Orlando and Tallahassee, Fla., and Dallas, will house more than 100 employees at its new headquarters, which is adjacent to the Duluth Town Green. Street level space is also available for retail businesses, offices or a restaurant. For information, call 770-476-2277. The building is expected to be completed in the fall.

"This event marks a milestone in both the construction of our new headquarters and the redevelopment of our downtown area," Dave Heydinger, President of Mathias Corp., said of the topping out event June 6 at Taylor Memorial Park. The event brought together more than 200 people, including city and county leaders, Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce members and staff from both companies.

"I am so glad to see so many of you here with your families," Anderson Bomar said at the event. "Family and community are important to all of us so it is most appropriate to be celebrating together." Anderson Bomar said she believes bringing a large office complex to the downtown area will help other businesses thrive. "You really need that kind of critical mass to make everything viable," she said of the city's downtown revitalization. "Now, it's not just weekend activity, but it's all day, every day activity." She said the results are already apparent. "The building coming up out of the ground has generated enough excitement that several other businesses have already opened," she said. "I think it's coming along famously."

Street Smarts Announces Endowment for Georgia Tech Women in Engineering Program

Marsha announces Endowment for GA Tech Women in Engineering

Marsha Anderson Bomar, President and owner of Duluth-based Street Smarts, Inc., announced an endowment for Georgia Tech's Women in Engineering M&M (Mentors and Mentees) program by the Street Smarts Foundation. This is the first ever endowment for the WIE.

Ms. Anderson Bomar made the announcement while delivering a thought provoking, inspirational keynote speech to an audience of over 500 students, faculty members, Georgia Tech leaders and corporate partners.

"So much of my career has been about mentoring - and the M&M program is what I would have created if I had had the opportunity. Since someone else had the great idea (for the program), all that was left for me was to show my support for this powerful opportunity..."

Ms. Anderson Bomar has been heavily involved in mentoring and philanthropy most of her life. She believes everyone has an obligation and opportunities to mentor, not only in their professional lives, but in their everyday lives, as well. "If we do not invest in each other, learn about each other, help each other and grow each other, ultimately, we are alone and we lose."

The endowment will be administered by the Street Smarts Foundation. Established in 2007 and funded entirely by Street Smarts employee donations, the Foundation assists local charities and community organizations where there is a need.
